This resource for Sound provides ideas for simple investigations as well as links to suggested books, to accompany the concept of sound but in real-life situations.

There are also a wide selection of resources which support the enquiry type "research using a range of resources", such as research cards exploring the development of hearing aids, or to identify key scientists linked to light discoveries. Other opportunities for research could also be used playing this simple card game which explores light sources and their history

A very interesting project from PSTT - "Growing Music" engages children in growing bamboo, to then make pan pipes. Find out more here!

If you're looking for an easier option try the fantastic Marvin and Milo cards from the Institute of Physics with their Loud Lollies investigation. Another worthwhile investigation by Marvin and Milo is learning about vibrations with the Musical Coat Hanger.

While you're there, also check out Marvin and Milo's Homemade Sunset investigation to learn about how scattered light changes the colours of the sky!

RSC Mission Starlight

In Mission Starlight, you can use your new UVA beads to investigate UV light levels. A super video accompanies this resource with clear instructions about how to carry out this investigation. This includes explanations to the relevance to our everyday life, but also links to astronauts with a video snippet from Tim Peake.

PSTT Starters for Science

Starters for Science are a series of five-minute videos to get the children started with a practical enquiry. These videos link a question or scenario from the real world along with a demonstration of a practical activity, which then encourages the children to create their own questions.

Starters on the topic of "Light" include Shadow Puppets, and Mirrors and Lights. The "Sound" one is Making Music.

Explorify

Explorify have a huge range of activities with instructions for teachers. Filter the resources in the 7-9 or 9-11 age range, as well as by your topic ("Light" or "Sound") to find a full range of activities, including "Odd One Out" and "Problem Solvers".

To engage in further planning support, you could watch a free, short video to find out how the Explorify activities can support science teaching in your classroom and across your school. These sessions also include a brief but useful planning document.

Science and STEM Clubs

Off the shelf resources for running extra-curricular clubs for children, with Children's University accreditation available. PSTT has a number of ready-to-go club packs that will have pupils engaged in practical investigations.

PSTT also shares lesson plans and ideas developed by teachers, for teachers, via their TAPS database. Refine your search to the Forces topic and select the appropriate age group to find what you need.
