Project: Investigations Science Week 2009
Tweedbank Primary School held an "Investigations Science Week" in March 2009. This involved visits from Zoolab, a local pharmaceutical company, health professionals, the countryside ranger, police and many more. P6 and P7 also had a fantastic visit to the Glasgow Science Centre and took part in a wide range of activities. Pupils also carried out experiments on fingerprinting and crime solving, and learnt about the human body. Some classes carried out experiments using magnets, while others investigated colour and water. A wonderful visit from the Science Sleuth helped two classes to investigate foods using a chemical indicator. Even the nursery joined in and investigated how animals move.

Project: Hawick Schools Science Week 2010
The children enjoyed talks from working professionals in science related fields and had carried out experiments and investigations related to their current topics. P3/4 had studied arthropods and life cycles and had used keys to identify organisms. P5 had made volcanoes and made them "erupt" using bicarbonate of soda, red food colouring and vinegar. They had also investigated magnets. P6 had studied volcanoes further and had exploded coca cola with Mentos mints. P5/6 had made lava lamps with oil and water. P5 also made a tested parachutes while P6 looked at why fruit goes brown and ways of preventing this. All classes had thoroughly enjoyed workshops from Professor Brainstorm called "Mission to Mars". They would all recommend this workshop to other schools.

The children also spent a day in Hawick High school and attended three sessions in:

  • Biology - where they looked at living things including bacteria under the microscope, snakes, Giant African snails and gerbils
  • Physics - where they investigated sound
  • Chemistry - where they used citrus fruits to generate electricity to power a buzzer
