A science grant from the Edina Trust can also be put towards a project to regenerate school grounds. In the past many schools have built ponds, outdoor classrooms and wildlife areas. All can be used to enhance the teaching of science, offering a change of scenery to the classroom.

Raised Pond Case Study
The cross shape increases the area around the pond for pupils to observe the pond life. A whole class can fit around the pond. The pond is raised for safety and ease of pond dipping and is enclosed in a fenced area.
The pond has been designed so that each segment is a different depth. Different plant life can be observed in each segment specific to the depth of water.
One end of the pond has an observation hatch. A perspex window has been cut into the side of the side to allow pupils to view the wildlife within the pond. The window is covered by a wooden door to protect it when the pond is not in use.

Outdoor Learning Case Study
